Perinatal substance use is a significant and growing public health concern. Women are most at risk of substance use during their reproductive years. Over a span of 7 years, opioid-related diagnoses documented at delivery increased by 131% (Hirai et al., 2021). Additionally, overdose deaths are one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. To address perinatal substance use, interventions need to target both the birthing person and the family system. Presenters will discuss the importance of standardized screening tools, and bias-free and trauma-informed care for the perinatal population. The presentation will also explore how early, coordinated, and interdisciplinary interventions can protect the maternal-child dyad and result in better longitudinal and multi-generational outcomes.
