The overall narrative of Black maternal health in mainstream media has been primarily focused on negative maternal and morbidity statistics, heart-wrenching headlines about Black maternal deaths, and an overall doom and gloom narrative. Birthright, a podcast about joy and healing in Black birth, frames joy as an act of resistance and works from a central premise that by seeking out and exploring joyful Black birth experiences we can find ideas, solutions, and blind spots in our quest for birth equity.
Birthright shares positive Black birthing stories to change this narrative, inspire hope and joy, and to educate key audiences. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn key themes derived from the qualitative analysis of 25 transcripts from Season one and Season two of the Birthright podcast. Attendees will learn:
Identify practices that help to facilitate Black birth givers experiencing joy while pregnant, during birth, and within the first few weeks postpartum.
Articulate how bias negatively impacts birth experiences for Black birth givers.
Discover methods that positively impact how Black birth givers feel while birthing in hospital settings.
Apply new skills and awareness to current practice
