This workshop defines trauma by looking at the physical and psychological impact it has on the brain and body. It allows the participant space to explore their own biases and judgements they may have developed working in the criminal justice system. The goal of the presentation is to understand the long-term effects of childhood adversities and traumatic experiences, and how to shift the language to a trauma informed approach to achieve better outcomes in the detained population.

Learning Objectives:

1. Define trauma and traumatic stress
2. Identify the direct impact of trauma on the brain and body and how it manifests physically, emotionally, and mentally in affected individuals
3. Understand the long-term effects of the Adverse Childhood Experiences study
4. Building the foundations of trauma-informed care to better serve detained populations
