Substance use is a major health issue among individuals in custody, and withdrawal from substances can be life-threatening. Jurisdictions have a pressing responsibility to save lives by implementing policies and protocol that align with legal, regulatory, and clinical standards related to appropriate withdrawal management. A panel of subject matter experts in jail administration and health care will offer information and guidance on the importance of implementing policies and protocols for screening individuals detained for risk of substance withdrawal. Presenters will discuss how to assess readiness for implementation, address key components of the withdrawal management decision process, and highlight solutions to challenges, including opportunities for technical assistance. This will be a listening session and panel discussion to discuss and address clinical and administrative matters for meeting the legal obligations and mitigating risk in any-sized jail setting.

Describe the decision process related to caring for individuals at risk of withdrawal (e.g., when to transfer to a higher level of care than can be provided within the jail).
