Pediatric dentistry residency program directors are responsible for preparing residents to practice as independent and competent providers upon graduation. The American Board of Pediatric Dentistry's board exam is meant to assess the clinical readiness of candidates, and its content ideally reflects the clinical and didactic education received during residence. A lack of clarity regarding the meaning and scope of clinical readinesss may pose challenges to teaching the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to successfully complete the board exam. The purpose of this research is to assess the awareness, motivation and challenges faced by program directors in preparing their residents to demonstrate clinical readiness on the board exam. The aim of this study is inform the design of additional strategies that the ABPD may employ to engage with and support program directors in their mission to train clinically competent and knowledgeable practitioners.
