Duke University Hospital launched Project COMET (Caring for Patients with Opioid Misuse through Evidence-based Treatment), a multidisciplinary, hospitalist-led initiative to improve care for inpatients with opioid use disorder (OUD) in July 2019. Presenters will describe: (1) development of their program, including engagement of key stakeholders and delivery of a business proposal to health system leadership, (2) launch of the program, and (3) lessons learned over the past two years. They will describe the patients they have evaluated to date, including demographic characteristics, comorbid diagnoses, health care utilization, and receipt of medication for OUD and naloxone.

Learning Objectives:

Describe development and implementation of a program to improve care for hospitalized patients with OUD
Explain the need for routine use of medication for OUD and withdrawal in the hospital setting with evidence obtained from this talk
Apply strategies and lessons learned to improve care for patients with OUD during hospitalization and post-discharge at their own institutions
