(341) Improving Care for Pregnant Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Patients by Increasing Knowledge in Obstetric Providers

Background: As pregnancies in CF patients increase, more patients are seeking to establish care with Obstetricians (OB). Our center noticed many OB providers either lack knowledge related to CF or do not have up to date information on care. We decided to focus on communication between OB and CF Providers, identifying knowledge gaps regarding care in pregnant CF patients, and expanding their knowledge of the disease. By working on this process we expect to expand OB knowledge of CF and enhance quality of care for pregnant patients. We aim to improve the quality of patient care from outdated or lack of information regarding the disease to standardized education on CF for OB providers between January 1, 2022 and April 1, 2022.

Methods: We started this project by collecting feedback from OB providers our pregnant patients were seeing. From the feedback received, the practitioners reported a lack of foundational CF knowledge. In addition to needing overall CF care information, specific topics requested included medications, treatments, comorbidities, and research. With these gaps in mind, we created our handout. The CF nurse collected data from CFF.org, as well as the multi disciplinary CF team. At various stages of creation, the information was sent to the team to review for accuracy of information, as well as to ensure all important topics were covered. The information was then organized by the social worker into an easy to read document.

Results: In creating the infographic handout, our intention was to produce an informative document that was easy to read, as well as eye catching and visually pleasing. We included an overview of care for pregnant individuals with CF. We highlighted key points including CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators, CF related diabetes, genetics, vitamins, medications, and dietary needs. Each topic has its own section that stands out in a multi-color scheme. After receiving confirmation of pregnancy, this handout is sent to the patient's OB provider.

Conclusions: By creating a standardized handout for OB providers, our CF center provides updated information on CF care, as well as resources to obtain additional information. By providing this document, the overall standard of care for our pregnant CF patients is improved. Additionally, the document is easy to update as CF care continues to evolve. Looking towards the future, we intend to use this handout as a template for educating other medical providers with whom our patients may establish care.
