Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Dr. Ansar Hassan obtained his medical degree from McGill University in 1998. He completed his residency training in cardiac surgery at Dalhousie University in 2007, during which time he acquired a PhD degree in social and clinical epidemiology. Following this, he embarked on a two-year clinical fellowship under the tutelage of Dr. W. Randolph Chitwood, the world’s leader in robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
Dr. Hassan joined the New Brunswick Heart Centre in 2009. There, he developed the first minimally invasive cardiac surgery program in Atlantic Canada, allowing for New Brunswickers with cardiac disease to undergo corrective surgery using less invasive techniques with shorter recovery times. In addition to his clinical contributions, Dr. Hassan established a strong cardiovascular research presence in New Brunswick, co-founding Cardiovascular Research New Brunswick (www.CVRNB.ca), acquiring peer-reviewed research grants from agencies such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation, and publishing numerous abstracts and manuscripts in well-renowned journals.
In 2021, Dr. Hassan and his family decided to go on an adventure and joined the cardiovascular surgery program at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. It on this, the latest chapter in his journey, that he really hopes to establish a cutting edge minimillay invasive and robotics cardiac surgery program all the while continuing to collaborate clinically and academically with colleagues north and south of the border.
