Tom Bretschneider is a biotechnologist by training and received his PhD from the university Jena in Germany. In his PhD he was studying non-canonical biosynthestic steps of biocative natural products and therby extended the toolbox for biosynthesis of potential drugs. For his work he was honored with multiple prices including the Leibniz-price for young scientists.
Since 2013 he is at Boehringer Ingelheim Germany in the drug discovery sciences department, dedicated to the mass-spectrometry-based measurement and discovery of biomarkers. As an associate director he is leading a team, which is applies mass spectroemtry in the process of hunting for innovative treatments and demonstrated track-record by multiple publications in the community.
