F03 - Deep Decarbonization Decisions: How to Efficiently Rid the Grid of Carbon - Siting and Operating Clean Energy Projects to Provide the Greatest Impact in Carbon Emission Reduction with the Lowest Financial Risk

Kevala, in collaboration with Exelon and National Grid, has developed a new framework for measuring locational carbon intensity on the electrical grid, which helps determine the most effective strategies for prioritizing climate change mitigation efforts. Our innovative approach provides a total carbon accounting (TCA) of the electrical grid by considering the carbon intensity on the grid on a time and locational basis, and has transformative implications in terms of where to site renewable generation (including rooftop PV generation), storage, and electrification projects, while also enhancing and improving the accuracy of carbon reporting. The TCA approach uniquely considers where the demand is located relative to renewable and conventional generation and the physical power flows on the grid. This is novel as most carbon intensity calculations involve averaging over large geographic areas and do not take account of physical power flows. Kevala, National Grid, and Exelon are seeking to share the TCA framework and engage in important dialogue with other industry participants on the opportunity to enhance and leverage TCA.
