Postdoctoral Associate
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Dr. Maria Proestaki began her academic studies at the University of Crete earning a BS degree in Applied Mathematics. She subsequently earned both a Master's and a PhD in Engineering Mechanics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was advised by Prof. Jacob Notbohm. Her PhD thesis was on structural heterogeneity in ECM and its effect on cell mechanosensing. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher working at MIT, Biological Engineering Department, with Prof. Roger Kamm as a member of the Mechanobiology Lab. Her research goal is to develop physiologically relevant 3D human skin cell culture models in microfluidic systems to better understand how such systems can be useful in predicting bioavailability in vivo or be an alternative to animal studies.
