Without doubt we have seen significant change and transformation in pharmaceutical research and development strategy. Not-so-long-ago, medication development was conducted by pharmaceutical companies. Dry pipelines, patent expirations, and increased competition have changed the landscape significantly to include multiple collaborations now between pharmaceutical companies, CRO/CDMOs, academic and smaller drug discovery and delivery companies. Not surprisingly, careers for pharmaceutical scientists have changed and new opportunities have surfaced. One avenue available to creative scientists is starting their own company with many entrepreneurial career paths available.
At a simplistic level there are three steps to starting a company 1) having an idea, 2) procuring funding and 3) getting it off the ground. This career development session features different perspectives on the many forms entrepreneurship can take. Participants will meet three different entrepreneurs (a consultant, a drug discovery innovator and a university professor) plus a venture capitalist, who will tell their stories, and participate in a panel discussion. Greg Verdine is a serial entrepreneur and the presentation will tell his story, what has let him to start several companies, and the issues/ opportunities encountered
