Scott Swaim is a licensed mental health counselor and veteran of the Gulf War. Swaim is currently the director of Adult System of Care for Aetna Medicaid and past director of Justice For Vets at the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. In the health care sector, he has managed and directed programs in community mental health for 25 years in Florida and Washington State. He has specialized in working with trauma survivors and developing systems of care to improve the quality of life of patients and participants. Swaim has worked with numerous systems to integrate care and services, most recently working with the judicial system with Veterans Treatment Courts and service providers such as the Veterans Administration, state and local entities. During his military service, Swaim was stationed overseas in Germany and traveled to 32 different countries as a C-5 Galaxy loadmaster based out of Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. While on active duty in the Air Force, Swaim earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Swaim later transferred to the Air Force Reserves. He has served on the joint Department of Defense-Veterans Administration workgroup on military culture training for clinicians, served as co-chair of the Military Trauma Conference in 2010 and 2011 and authored the Quickseries guide on military and veteran culture. He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and member of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
