Gary Belkin was formerly Deputy Health Commissioner for New York City, which he left to found and lead the Billion Minds Institute which aims to bring policy and practical attention and change for taking on the “social climate” crisis of the climate crisis. He has implemented and advanced innovative approaches to mental health, especially those that integrate within and amplify social and community capabilities, policies, and goals at scale. This includes the largest community-integrated and participatory approach to mental health in the US, ThriveNYC, which launched as a $250m/yr investment. Gary has held senior management positions in government and in large health and human service systems, including as Medical Director for Behavioral Health across the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation. He is Founding Editor of the journal Global Mental Health, and assumed roles as advisor to WHO and multiple US urban settings and local government partnerships globally, and as a teacher and researcher.
