Implementing an ideal crisis system in your community isn’t easy. You need a roadmap – and you’ve got one! Based on the National Council’s 2021 publication, Roadmap to the Ideal Crisis System: Essential Elements, Measurable Standards, and Best Practices, we’ll envision behavioral health crisis systems as essential community safety net services like fire/EMS with three core building blocks: 1) accountability and financing structure; 2) comprehensive service continuum, and 3) clinical best practices, including a report card to measure progress. Then, we’ll discuss Tucson’s progress towards an ideal crisis system and, finally, find out how the National Council is advocating for ideal crisis systems.

Define the essential elements of a comprehensive behavioral health crisis system.
Describe examples of successful community approaches to behavioral health crisis care.
Discuss how recent policy and funding developments can support improved crisis care.
