Substance use disorder (SUD) is often overlooked in the intellectual and developmental disorders (IDD) population, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) only recently acknowledged the special needs of this group. We’ll look at the causes, special consideration and discuss abuse, exploitation and diversion.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the setting in which those with IDD live and the protective factors and vulnerabilities associated with these settings.
Identify the special treatment considerations and needs of those with IDD.
Compare the approved medications and their use in IDD populations.
