How do animal welfare scientists think about animal welfare? How do they assess it? And why should those who work with insects think about insect welfare--and insect welfare assessment--in similar ways? This talk answers these questions by providing an overview of the most prominent theory of animal welfare and standard welfare assessment tools. Then, it develops an argument based on a precautionary principle for extending the same theory and assessment tools to insects.
