European foulbrood has been under statutory control in parts of the United Kingdom since the 1940s. The recorded annual colony prevalence has fluctuated from 0.05% to 4% and various control measures have been deployed. Giles will run through how our understanding of European foulbrood epidemiology has evolved as the UK attempted new control methods, implemented new technologies like GPS and lateral flow devices, and deployed multi-locus sequence typing schemes at a national level. He will share an understanding of which elements of the current national inspection programme contribute to increased disease discovery, and share his experience of working with policy colleagues to optimise the deployment of inspection resources at a national level.
