Professor University of Guelph Guelph, Ontario, Canada
Entomologists, like insects, tend to move a lot. This has been my case during the course of my life since I made the decision to become an entomologist and study social insects, and in particular honey bees. I swarmed like bees do from my tropical environment in Southern Mexico to the high plateau of the country to get a DVM degree. Then, I swarmed again to California where I received graduate education in entomology. Other swarming events happened, the last one to Canada, where I work as professor and director of the Honey Bee Research Centre, University of Guelph. I have learned from the different colleagues and mentors I have worked with. I have not only learned about research and academic matters but also about life and culture. I believe it is important to absorb the good things of every culture and get rid of the bad ones. This talk will summarize my swarming events and how they relate to entomology, work, social life, and culture.
