Spanning 150 years in service, Canada’s historic and national policing institution, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), has had its share of controversy and challenges with regards to inclusion and systemic racism. The proliferation of the Defund the Police Movement and the recent discovery of thousands of unmarked graves of indigenous residential school children has highlighted the inequities that indigenous, Black, and racialized communities have experienced in Canada and has allowed an opportunity for the RCMP to take an internal look at its role as systems leaders in creating positive change. This journey is about building its capacity to effectively address these issues with compassion and become an equitable policing agency while working effectively with these communities.
