Public Information Manager Boca Raton Police Boca Raton, Florida, United States
Social media and law enforcement have changed drastically in the last decade. Gone are the days of sharing comments and posts and getting accolades back in the comment section. Today, we have hatred toward law enforcement and racist and anti-Semitic comments toward others who give a differing opinion. So how do we as public information officers manage those comments, keeping things clean, avoiding hatred without violating the First Amendment rights of the posters? Lawsuits have been filed against police departments who delete, edit, or alter comments of followers. In this presentation, we will jump into best practices for agencies, how to manage your followers and comments, and examine some case studies from agencies around the United States and how they have dealt with complaints and lawsuits.
