Topics: Fitness For Duty Exams: Recent Cases Several recent cases from across the United States will be discussed that address what a police administrator must have in order to justify ordering an officer to submit to a fitness for duty exam. A handout will contain a citation and summary of the facts and court rulings.
Substance Abuse Accommodations Under the Americans With Disabilities Act This presentation consists of a review of the legal requirements to accommodate “disabled” employees in public safety agencies. Recent court cases will be discussed. Particular attention will be paid to what a police psychologist is likely to be asked by a chief or other government official regarding how to determine who is entitled to an accommodation, as well as what kinds of accommodation are appropriate.
Fostering Mental Health in the Workplace
With the recent focus on mental health issues being experienced by public safety workers, police psychologists are being asked to provide an ever-expanding array of services. This presentation will identify several issues that psychologists are uniquely qualified to address.
