As a child of the 80's and 90's, Amanda grew up in the culture of being "color-blind". She was taught that the only thing that mattered was the quality of the person, not the color of their skin. And success was merely a result of work ethic. This lecture will explore how this ideology of color-blindness has actually widened the inequities experienced by the BIPOC community and creates a false-narrative that, while convenient, is detrimental to anti-racism efforts. Let's get rid of this idea that we don't see color and start to look for our own blind spots.
Learning Objectives:
Articulate at least two reason and or ways the ideology of colorblindness is harmful.
Identify three ways in their career where they may be subject to bias thoughts or behaviors.
Describe a way in which they can actively combat racism and bias in their own lives.
