Jeroen de Baaij (1987) is a physiologist interested in the molecular and genetic origin of renal electrolyte disorders, including hypomagnesemia. He works as associate professor at the Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. His research focusses on the identification and characterisation of new genes involved in renal magnesium reabsorption.Using a wide range of molecular, cellular and physiological techniques, he examines new genes or new regulatory pathways in magnesium (re)absorption in the kidney. Supported by an ERC Starting Grant, NWO Veni Grant and several grants of the Dutch Kidney Foundation and the Dutch Diabetes Research Foundation, his team is also examining the role of magnesium in the prevention of cardiovascular complications and in the development of the type 2 diabetes mellitus.
