My academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science and Biotechnology, as well as a Doctorate in Physiological Sciences from the São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil.
My research background involves experience from respiratory labs, in Brazil and Canada. I worked at Dr. Gargaglioni’s lab (UNESP-Brazil) and with Dr. Kinkead and Dr. Joseph (Laval University-Canada). I am currently pursuing my postdoctoral studies at Université Laval, Faculty of Medicine in Québec at Dr.Richard Kinkead's team.
My passion is doing research in sex dimorphism. This was always a challenge as almost all the knowledge that is available in physiology is based on male research. While there is a growing appreciation for the importance of sex-based research, I have been contributing to this area of physiology for the past 13 years. My postdoctoral research aims to provide new mechanistic insights into the origins of cardiorespiratory changes due to stress-related neuroendocrine dysfunction in females.
My biggest goal is to become a professor and researcher. For my career, I wish to develop a logical extension of my studies by focusing on sex-based differences in cardio-respiratory regulation affected by stress and age. For example, female sex hormones (especially estradiol) have a protective effect on numerous functions, including regulation of blood pressure but its therapeutically potential has not been fully exploited.
