Dr. Thornell received his BS (Biology) from Penn State University and his PhD (Cellular, Developmental and Intergrative Biology) from the University of Alabama Birmingham under the supervision of Dr. Mark O. Bevensee studying the regulation of bicarbonate transporters. He continued his postdoctoral training with Dr. Michael J Welsh (University of Iowa and Howard Hughes Medical Institute) studying anion transport across epithelia. Dr. Thornell's lab is interested in anion transport across epithelia with a focus on airway epithelia.
