Listening to and partnering with students to build inclusive STEM communities
Sarah L. Bunnell Amherst College
Following a student-led protest in 2015, Amherst College faculty and staff members in STEM partnered with students to co-create the Being Human in STEM (HSTEM) Initiative. At its center is a co-designed course, which seeks to prepare students to be inclusive change agents and provide faculty and staff with strategies for creating more equitable classrooms and research spaces. This presentation will share some of the lessons learned from that work, focused on how we might better listen and partner with our students while also preparing them to better listen to and partner with each other. This presentation will also share some concrete strategies and provide recommendations for how these practices may translate to your own teaching and learning context.
