Dr. Totten has had a long and varied career in emergency medicine. After graduating from Loyola- Stritch School of Medicine in 1978, she did an internal medicine internship, served in the US public health service, completed a residency in family medicine, and spent 10 years working in remote rural, critical access emergency departments.
In 1990 she leapt into academia beginning in Brooklyn NY, followed by University Hospitals Case Medical Center (with intermittent sojourns to Sweden where she has practiced as an emergency physician). She completed her academic career as Institutional Research Director at Kaweah Delta Medical Center in central California. She now holds an adjunct professorship at the California Health Sciences University in Clovis, California, where she teaches part time. She also works on the Navajo reservation as an emergency physician.
Doctor Totten has had an interest in the LGB community since her undergraduate years when she served as the president of USC's gay student union in her freshman year.
