Stephan Lane is the Biofoundry Manager of the Illinois Biofoundry for Advanced Biomanufacturing (iBioFAB) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After establishing a background in metabolic engineering of yeasts, Stephan transitioned into the field of laboratory automation for his post-doctoral work. Stephan and the iBioFAB team work to automate the design-build-test-learn (DBTL) cycle for synthetic biology applications. In addition to automating the “build” and “test” phases using robotics, Stephan and the iBioFAB team now aim to automate the “design” and “learn” phases by developing seamless workflows integrating machine learning tools with their Thermo Fisher Momentum-based automation platform.
