Dr. Ben Mitchell is a librarian, public historian, and scholar in science and technology studies and the history of science and medicine. His dissertation “Dancing in Chains: A History of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Physiological Relativism” localized the thought of the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche in the context of popular and professional medical debates about the relativity of sensation and perception and principles of dynamic self-regulation at the end of the nineteenth century.
As a curator at the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre he researched the history of the former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital and delivered talks, exhibits, and tours to the public on the history of mental health, nerodiveristy, and psychiatric institutions in Ontario.
Since learning that he is autistic in 2019 (at the age of 33), he has turned his research attention to historical and contemporary topics in patterns of information sharing and community building in neurodivergent spaces. He has spoken on topics related to neurodiversity and early career librarianship at conferences such as the New Librarians Symposium and the Atlantic Provinces Library Association’s Annual Conference and has served as a mentor and peer-support to disabled early career librarians through the OLA’s MentorMatch program.
He is currently looking for employment in any of his chosen fields.
