Dr. Melcer serves as a civilian research psychologist and a principal investigator at NHRC. He manages a research protocol which is a collaborative effort between Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs researchers and data sources. The research focuses on longitudinal studies of long-term physical and psychological outcomes and associated health care costs. The impact of this work is to inform medical decisions and planning to improve rehabilitation outcomes for service members who sustained limb amputations and other combat injuries during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Dr. Melcer also studies the relationship between early postinjury pain medications on the battlefield and posttraumatic stress disorder outcomes following combat injury.
