I completed my postdoctoral fellowship in Oncology and Molecular Biology from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine (1983-1987). I joined University of California San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) in 1987. I am currently a Professor Emeritus and Director of Urology Research Center at UCSF/VAMC and a Senior Research Career Scientist (Department of Veterans Affairs, Washington DC) at the Veterans Affairs Health Care System, San Francisco. My research projects are funded through the VA and NIH and focused on investigating the following areas: (1) The role of non-coding RNAs in the initiation, progression and metastasis of urological cancers using in vitro and in vivo models. (2) Genetic biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of urological malignancies using clinical specimens. (3) Molecular mechanism of prostate cancer health disparities. (4) Mechanisms of drug resistance and its reversal using various pathways in vitro and in vivo models. I have trained more than 100 postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists during my career, most of whom currently hold faculty positions at various academic institutions. I have published over 350 research manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
