Maria T. Abreu, MD, is a gastroenterologist who specializes in inflammatory bowel disease. She is the Director of the Crohn's and Colitis Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Professor of Medicine and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. She has more than 20 years of leadership experience in basic, translational/clinical research and mentoring. She is the recent recipient of a prestigious T32 grant. She is a nationally and internationally renowned physician-scientist in IBD and one of few academicians who has extensive experience in clinical IBD and basic science. Dr. Abreu is frequently invited as a speak at CME-accredited seminars and symposia on basic science and clinical topics world-wide. She was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2010 and was the Council Chair of the AGA Institute Council thru 2018. Her most recent appointment was as the Vice Chair of Research for the UM Department of Medicine, GI Division. She was also recently appointed as the Deputy Chair of the International Organisation for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IOIBD); she will serve as Chair starting in 2019. In 2018, Dr. Abreu was elected to the prestigious Association of American Physicians (AAP). The goals of AAP members include the pursuit of medical knowledge and advancement through experimentation and discovery of basic and clinical science and their application to clinical medicine. Her teaching activities are wide-reaching and include teaching graduate students and medical students; she believes that her extensive experience mentoring medical students/residents as well as pre-doctoral/post-doctoral graduate students combined with her experience as a physician-scientist has been an invaluable asset and blessing in her successful career. She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, books, chapters and reviews, and is a frequent speaker at national and international symposia on basic science and clinical topics.
