Associate Professor Emeritus
University of California, San Francisco
San Jose, California, United States
Dr. Dorothy J. Rowe received her entry-level dental hygiene education and a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene (MS-DH) from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in Oral Biology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She has spent over 50 years teaching and/or conducting research related to oral health at various institutions, most notably, the University of Iowa and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Her initial research interests focused on the activation and inhibition of bone resorption and had been funded by multiple federal grants.
A change of career direction led her to retire briefly from UCSF to establish a new 2-year dental hygiene educational program—designing the curriculum and writing all documents for initial accreditation. Returning to UCSF she assisted in the development of a new MS-DH program, in which she then taught biological and research-oriented courses. Supervising the development and execution of student research projects was her major focus in the program and led to 23 of her 28 MS-DH students successfully publishing their research. Upon closure of the program, Dr. Rowe retired again, but is still actively contributing to the scholarly activities of dental hygienists as a member of the Editorial Review Board and Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Dental Hygiene.
