Dr. Callan Fockele is a physician and population health research fellow in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Washington. She studies the social determinants of health, with a focus on addiction and homelessness. Through her work in the emergency department (ED) and permanent supportive housing for people with severe mental health and substance use disorders, she is engaged in quality improvement around the distribution of take-home naloxone and safer use kits, emergency medical service protocols after non-fatal opioid overdose, and countywide expansion of an ED-initiated buprenorphine pathway. She is interested in improving transitions of care for vulnerable populations, screening ED patients for social risks and needs, and providing evidence-based care to people who use drugs.
