Overview: Storytelling has been used in many cultures over the centuries. It is equally beneficial today as it has been throughout the years. One program working with older adults used storytelling and discovered improved social interactions, increased connectedness, and a greater sense of empowerment in those that participated.Proposal text: In this interactive workshop, participants will: create and share their own story in small groups, review a storytelling intervention facilitated in a program working with older adults, compare the program's results with outcomes from current research, and apply acquired information and experience to their work. The workshop begins with participants engaging in an example of a storytelling intervention program. This allows participants to learn and experience a small portion of the storytelling process that program initiative members have experienced. After sharing their stories in groups of 2-3, participants will review the rich cultural history of storytelling. Participants will then explore the components of the storytelling initiative such as storycircles, storytelling workshops, and community storytelling events. They will also examine the intervention outcomes of improved communication, increased connection, and a greater sense of empowerment between program members. The challenges, solutions, and areas of growth as the initiative continues will also be discussed. This section will include narrative and video examples. Participants will be able to compare the results from the program to results from current research regarding the use of storytelling. Participants will then be able to apply their experiences to their current work and share this information with other participants. The workshop will conclude with questions and answers and additional resources.
