Quality Nurse Specialist ECU Health (previously Vidant Health) Greenville, North Carolina
Purpose - What was the goal of the study?: The AIM of this project was to decrease Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) by April 2021.
Background - What was the problem? Why was it important?: There was an increase in CLABSI in over FY20 with a peak of n=30 CLABSI in FY21 1st Quarter with multiple contributing factors. We identified a need for a hospital wide back to the basics approach with focused work in units of opportunity. A collaborative approach was utilized across disciplines and the CLABSI Reduction Project: For the Love of the Line was implemented January 2021.
Results - What were the findings?: The results showed a huge success of a 70 percent (n=9) reduction in CLABSI by April 2021. We were also able to maintain a sustained reduction of 58% based on quarterly average for the remainder of FY21. The cost savings was approximately 1.5 million dollars.
Conclusions - What do the final outcomes mean?: Three other hospitals in our system have on boarded this project. We are also sustaining this project by continuing to do hospital wide work and data collection to identify units of opportunity to lead future work in specific units. To ensure that all team members are doing the best care for our patients, huddle sheets on CVL (central venous line) care are shared at the beginning of FY and mid-FY in unit huddles hospital wide.
