In May of 2020, NIH released the first-ever, strategic plan for nutrition research emphasizing a Precision Nutrition model focused on “food as medicine”. Over the next ten years, the 2020-2030 Strategic Plan for NIH Nutrition Research will advance nutrition science via “innovative technologies and interdisciplinary teams.” Key initiatives focus on:
1) Discovery and Innovation through Foundational Research, 2) Investigating the Role of Dietary Patterns and Behaviors for Optimal Health, 3) Defining the Role of Nutrition Across the Lifespan, and 4) Reducing the Burden of Disease in Clinical Settings. Particular emphasis is focused on training the nutrition scientific workforce to solve the nation’s most pressing “nutrition-related health problems”.
There has been national interest in training current and future generations of healthcare workers on how to implement evidence-based nutrition into clinical practice to optimize patient health outcomes. Despite a growing body of research reinforcing the importance of a food as medicine approach, gaps persist in adopting a multidisciplinary approach to translate evidence-based nutrition research into clinical and community settings (e.g. limited nutrition education training among frontline healthcare workers). Further efforts focused on improvements to translational research and delivery science are needed for proper training and associated delivery among healthcare professionals.
To address this important topic, the Community and Public Health Nutrition (CPHN) forum as part of the Nutrition 2022 Live Online annual meeting held by the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) will bring together a multidisciplinary team of healthcare scientists and clinicians to discuss their perspectives on the best ways to incorporate precision nutrition into the healthcare setting.
