This session spotlights the collaboration of community activists, public agencies, and landscape architects in creating a new park on vulnerable waterfront property at Pier 42 on New York City’s East River. Together these groups fostered river ecology, connected communities, stemmed the tide of gentrification, and advanced social equity.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand how a grassroots coalition of residents and community organizations can succeed in fighting back and offering an alternative strategy for creating a park that meets a vulnerable neighborhood’s needs.
Explore tactics that spotlight a site’s context and neighborhood’s needs so that municipal agencies may devise a scope of work and planning process that can effect a responsive, resilient design.
Examine how inclusive community engagement processes can cultivate the role of landscape architects in creating more fitting design programs while embracing natural processes in environmental restoration and flood mitigation.
Identify replicable strategies within project funding constraints to negotiate with municipal agencies and achieve resilient, ecological solutions and renewable energy technology for environmentally sensitive sites.
