Learning and Doing: Using Online Trainings and Evidence-Based Resources to Learn from our Past and Plan for the Future

Full Description: The passage of Title V of the Social Security Act signaled the commitment of the federal government to promote the health and welfare of all women, children, and families. The Strengthen the Evidence for MCH Programs initiative (the Evidence Center) has been collecting seminal resources focused on the work of Title V for over 85 years through its MCH Digital Library. Combined with the MCH Navigator, the field’s virtual pathway for competency-based training, these projects represent a coordinated effort to make the vision of Title V, established in 1935, a reality in 2022. This workshop will challenge participants to “learn” by presenting resources and trainings and to “do” by sharing tools and providing an action plan inspired by lessons learned from MCH’s rich history and rooted in the most current science.
This workshop will begin with participants identifying which Title V MCH domain they want to work in during the session. Once in their group, participants will be presented a “then-and-now” view of each domain from the MCH Digital Library’s archives. For the first 45 minutes, groups will be asked to identify knowledge and skills needed to advance each domain based on the MCH Leadership Competencies from the MCH Navigator. Presenters will facilitate a discussion on how to implement these resources at the state and community level in ways to advance health equity and with an eye of coordinating with others to address social determinants of health.
In the next 40 minutes, participants will complete an abbreviated version of the MCH Navigator’s competency self-assessment tool. Results will provide a tailored output of resources, tools, and learning opportunities available on the Navigator’s website to advance their own workforce capacity to start on the action steps to move into the next stage: implementation.
In the next 45 minutes, participants will remain in their MCH domain groups and will complete the Population Turn the Curve (PTTC) tool, developed by the Evidence Center. Based on the Results-based Accountability (RBA) framework, this tool will guide participants through a series of prompts that include: identifying an indicator of interest, the story behind the indicator, understanding the roles of partners, and generating ideas about what works. This hands-on, interactive opportunity to complete the PTTC tool also provides opportunities to reflect on health equity considerations that have been adapted from Harvard’s IDEAS Impact framework. Finally, using the Performance Measurement Tool (PMT), participants will brainstorm ways to measure the identified strategies in the PTTC tool. By the end of this section, participants will have developed a list of strategies to improve outcomes around their chosen indicator as well as ideas on how to measure activities.
The final portion of this workshop will summarize the activities of the day, prompt participants on where to find more information, and respond to any questions or comments.

Participants will complete the MCH Navigator’s self-assessment tool, providing a tailored output of resources and tools for each participant. Transitioning to doing, participants will complete two tools, based on the Results-based Accountability framework; thus allowing participants to identify strategies that work and how to measure strategies for intended success.
By the end of this session, participants will increase their skills and knowledge to develop, implement and evaluate strategies relevant to their MCH and Title V work.
