Z. Leilani Spence, received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Memphis. Currently, Ms. Spence is the Deputy Administrator of Maternal Child Health for The Shelby County Health Department, Memphis, Tennessee. In this role, she is responsible for the supervision and leadership of programs, including CHANT, that focus on ensuring positive birth outcomes, coordinating population-based services, and reducing health disparities.
Ms. Spence has over 35 years in public health and is a devoted public health professional. She has provided leadership and guidance in an array of work settings, to include a public health department; a community- based home health agency, and a post- secondary university (The University of Tennessee Medical Center, Memphis). In each of her public health professional roles, Ms. Spence has been actively involved in developing strategies to strengthen community engagement, leverage resources, and ameliorate public health issues.
