Dr. Schnabel completed her veterinary degree at Cornell University and then went on to complete an internship at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital before returning to Cornell as a postdoctoral fellow in the Orthopedic Laboratories of Dr. Lisa Fortier and Dr. Alan Nixon where she performed research on tendon and ligament repair. Dr. Schnabel completed her surgery residency at Cornell from 2006-2009 and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) in 2010. She then completed her PhD with Dr. Fortier on the immunologic properties of stem cells while also working as an emergency surgeon at Cornell.
Dr. Schnabel moved to North Carolina State University (NC State) in 2013 to both work in the equine hospital and build her own independent research laboratory. Both her clinical and research work are focused on the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and advancing equine rehabilitation protocols. In 2015, Dr. Schnabel became a Diplomate of the American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) and also started a new ACVSMR Residency Program at NC State, which she is the director.. To date, she has mentored six surgery residents, three ACVSMR residents, and over 20 interns in the hospital as well as five PhD students, 1 master’s student, ten veterinary students, and over 25 undergraduate students in her laboratory. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed publications, given invited presentations nationally and internationally, and has received both external and internal funding for her research work. In 2019, Dr. Schnabel was appointed as an associate director of the Comparative Medicine Institute at NC State and was also named an North Carolina State University Faculty Scholar for her success in clinical work, research, teaching, mentorship, and community outreach efforts. In 2020, Dr. Schnabel was awarded the Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence.
