Anesthesia cannot be defined merely by the time that the patient is unconscious, but rather by a continuum of care that begins at home with the owner and does not end until the patient returns home to the owner for follow-up care. The objective of the AAHA 2020 Anesthesia Guidelines is to make the anesthesia period as safe as possible for dogs and cats using a practical framework for delivering a continuum of anesthesia care before, during, and after the anesthetic procedure. To optimize patient health and welfare post-anesthetic care doesn’t end at hospital discharge but continues at home with the pet owner. In addition, this session contains a detailed plan for anesthesia/analgesia staff training that maximizes the safety and efficiency of anesthesia in every practice.
