This lecture will provide attendees with knowledge and tools to reduce the risk of MDR infections in their clinical practice through lecture topics and case presentations. Topics discussed will include reducing unnecessary use of antibiotics, optimizing selection of prophylactic surgical antibiotics, and optimizing therapeutic antibiotic selection for surgical site infections. Strategies for assessing the risk of MDR infections in individual patients and tips for tailoring clinical management based on the risk of MDR infections will be discussed. Specifically, the risks associated with previous and current antibiotic treatment, hospitalization, and medical device use will be discussed. Hospital biosecurity strategies to reduce the nosocomial transmission risk of MDR pathogens will be discussed, including operating theater specific strategies.
