Infections caused by multi drug resistant (MDR) pathogens are common in tertiary veterinary care settings. Many MDR pathogens are extremely challenging to manage clinically, but they can also of tremendous public health concern due to bacterial sharing between pets and their owners. Carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae, extended Spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae, and chloramphenicol-methicillin resistant staphylococcal species will be reviewed though lecture topics and case presentations. Current trends and recently acquired data in clinical, patient surveillance, and environmental surveillance will be discussed for MDR pathogens in tertiary veterinary care. Tips and tricks for improved utilization of antibiotic susceptibility testing data for optimized antibiotic therapy will be discussed.
