Injuries to the common calcaneal tendon, also known as Achilles tendon are considered as a rare condition in cats. Very few reports exist regarding treatment and outcome, all having in common low numbers of cases, making clear conclusions difficult. In most cases surgical repair of the tendon and temporary tibio-tarsal joint immobilization are recommended with several techniques described. A recent multi-centre study performed at different centers throughout Germany has evaluated the largest number of feline patients with Achilles tendon rupture so far. Results of that study regarding injury type, surgical technique, complications and short and long term outcome will be presented.
