What the BEEP? Why Is My Monitor Alarming at Me? Intraoperative Anesthetic Patient Monitoring Integrative Approaches To Team-Centered Perianesthetic Care
Education and Training Specialist University of Florida Veterinary Hospitals, Florida
Physical assessment of the patient’s physiological status (heart rate, mucous membrane color, respiratory rate and jaw tone, to name a few) is crucial for a quick assessment of the patient’s anesthetic plane. The use of multi-parameter measurement devices provides supplemental data, which will enable the anesthetist to fully evaluate the patient’s anesthetic depth and can identify common complications. Identification of these complications allows for early intervention, increasing patient safety, and reducing patient morbidity. Critical components of monitoring include the assessment of the circulation, respiratory and thermoregulation systems.
