This session will stress the concept of "herd-level" in the quantitative assessment of clinicopathological variables. Emphasis will be placed on sorting the "signal" from the "noise" when interpreting results from tests of multiple animals in a given herd. Bovine hepatic trace element concentrations will be used as an example. A review of data from the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will form the basis of the discussion. In addition to the proceedings paper, handouts describing the distribution of herd-level values for trace element concentrations will be available at the presentation.

Learning Objectives:

Laboratory methods can be useful in assessing health and nutritional status of cattle herds. Participants in this session will be able to evaluate differences in the statistical characteristics of interpreting clinicopathological data at herd-level, versus individual-animal level.
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to describe the influence of "signal" versus "noise" in the interpretation of herd-level clinical pathology results.
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to better select the numbers of animals to sample when using analysis of hepatic biopsy samples for evaluation of herd-level trace element nutriture in cattle.
