Comparison of Pharmacokinetics for Cannabinoid Products in Small Animals

Use of cannabinoids, particularly cannabidiol (CBD), is increasingly common in small animals. However, cannabinoid products commonly used in North American pets are not actually approved for veterinary use. Cannabinoid formulations are not uniform, and can lead to substantial differences in pharmacokinetics between products. This session will compare the published pharmacokinetic data for specific cannabinoid formulations in dogs and cats, focusing on CBD and THC concentrations. More importantly, we will discuss how veterinarians can use these results to provide appropriate dosing recommendations and education for clients choosing to administer cannabinoid products to their pets.
