Several measurement problems have hindered the study, assessment, and intervention of post-injury sequelae in individuals with neurological disorders. This symposium discusses new approaches combining mobile technologies and advanced analytic techniques to address potential measurement issues, such as lack of ecological validity, limited capacity to monitor dynamic changes, and patient heterogeneity. Mobile technologies allow for the collection of real-time symptoms or functions from patients in their natural settings repeatedly over time. They can be more accurate than traditional self-report measures that ask patients to describe their symptoms over a specific recall period. Using new and advanced data analytic techniques, researchers can develop robust models to understand and disentangle the dynamic nature of disabling symptoms, human behaviors, and intervention responses. This symposium will share several projects in which we have used mobile technologies and advanced data analytic methods to improve rehabilitation measurement.
